SQUAT – Kim-Sanh Châu Restitution

During a one-week residency at Dancenter, Kim-Sanh Châu is continuing the research for a new group piece, set to premiere in Montréal in 2026.

This new creation revolves around the collective act of squatting—a demanding gesture: lowering oneself, engaging the thighs, staying close to the ground. Bodies resist; the posture is hard to maintain. Yet, together, we adapt, we cheat, and we support one another. The difficulty becomes fertile ground for solidarity, strategy, and play.

Rather than striving for height, dominance, or conventional success, the body folds inward, anchors itself, and meets the world from below. It resists the gaze from above and opens space for a grounded, alternative perspective.

In a time shaped by individualism and ambition, SQUAT proposes a quiet counter-narrative—one that embraces imbalance, interdependence, and the quiet beauty of shared, unspectacular effort.
